HP 17z Laptop Review: My Initial Thoughts

HP notebooks are well-known for being some of the most popular. One of these notebooks is the HP 17z.

This notebook was equipped with many useful features by HP, and the price didn’t go up. The HP 17z was priced at $499 when I reviewed it in February 2022.

But will the HP 17z compromise performance in exchange for its low price? Let’s see what the next sections reveal.

HP 17z Laptop Design, Dimensions, And Weight Review

Display

The HP 17z notebook is among the most affordable that doesn’t cost as much as it looks. It has a beautiful appearance.

The HP 17z, despite its attractive exterior, is made from plastic like its predecessor. This laptop is therefore fragile because of the plastic material it is made with.

The HP 17z is available in three beautiful colors: black, silver and blue. This HP 17z review is specifically based on the silver variant. While any of the three colors would suit this laptop well, silver is my favorite.

The HP 17z’s appearance will still be apparent. You will still find the ” hp logo” at the top of the lid. It looked like the inscribed “HP” logo was split into two colors: black and silver.

This logo is more prominent in silver than in other colors. The display is held up by two large, chrome hinges when you open the laptop’s cover. These hinges, made by HP, are very rigid and secure the lid.

The lid may wobble a little when you adjust it.

The 17.3-inch white LED-backlit display on this laptop will impress you. This display boasts a HD+ (1600×900 pixels) resolution.

An HD+ resolution display has a quality that is between Full HD and HD resolutions. A display with an HD+ resolution is superior to one with HD resolution.

It isn’t as good as a display with a FHD resolution.

The HP 17z also features an SVA panel with anti-glare coating. The SVA panel provides a better viewing angle and reduces screen reflections.

You can also get the laptop with touchscreen or Nontouchscreen options, depending on your preference.

They are very thin for the screen bezels. The top bezel is thick enough for an HD webcam and the best integrated digital microphone. The same logo appears in the middle of the bottom edge.

Keyboard and touchpad

The keyboard can be found on the deck. Although the keyboard is solidly built, the keys are made from plastic.

They have a shallow key travel and provide little feedback during typing. Some users prefer to type with shallow key travel, while others prefer long key travel.

If you prefer shallow keys, the keyboard on HP 17z will provide you with a more comfortable typing experience. These keys can make a lot noise while typing, which might not be a good idea for some people.

To clarify, the term “key travel”, refers to how deep a computer’s keyboard key goes to register input when it presses it.

The dedicated touchpad can be found by moving down towards the keyboard’s end. This touchpad measures 11.5×5.0 cm, which is more than most notebook touchpads.

Moreover, the touchpad of this HP 17z has a precise cursor movement when moving up. The cursor is restricted when it moves sideways.

This touchpad also supports multi-touch gestures up to four fingers. The touchpad has an automatic palm detection capability.

Palm detection allows the touchpad to detect accidental palm touches or finger movements while typing.

Ports

The ports are located at the sides and bottom of the keyboard base.  There are two USB 3.0 ports. The left side has an AC charging port and Ethernet port.

On the right side there is an SD card slot, USB 2.0 port and a DVD-Writer. This laptop is equipped with enough ports to meet all your connectivity needs.

Dimensions

Before I get into the dimensions of the laptop, it is important to note that the speaker is located just above the keyboard. The stereo speakers of the HP 17z are top-notch and produce high quality sound.

This laptop’s multimedia sound can fill a room with its powerful sound without the need for an external speaker. You might feel some vibrations at the keyboard palm rest due to the loud sound of this speaker.

Size and Weight

Let’s now talk about the size and weight of this laptop. It’s weights in at 2553.7g and measures 414.7×272.2x 24.3mm (WxDxH span> ).

The HP 17z is smaller than the HP ENVY 17, which is also a 17 inch laptop. The HP ENVY 17 is 2780g in weight and measures 399x259x 19.3mm (WxDxH ). ).

HP 17z is lighter than my competitor, but it is still very heavy. It might be uncomfortable to carry around the HP 17z in your backpack for long periods of time.

It is a notebook that stands out among other notebooks in its class, despite having a plastic construction. This is why I’m giving it an 8/10 in the design and dimension review section.

HP 17z Laptop Processor (CPU) Performance Review

The laptop is equipped with an AMD Ryzen 5 3500U processor. This processor is 4 cores with a minimum frequency 2.10 GHz.

The processor has a maximum frequency at 3.70GHz and a 4MB cache. This laptop’s 4 cores allow it to perform more quickly multiple tasks at once with ease.

To be certain about the processor’s capabilities, I will share with you the CineBench R15 benchmark results.

Cinebench R15, a test tool that measures the processor performance of a computer, is called Cinebench R15.Cinebench R15 is a test tool that tests the performance of a computer’s processor.

The single-core test, where one processor core is used, is the first part of this test. The second part of this test, however, is the multicore test. This test uses all processor cores.

A higher score indicates that the laptop performed better during these tests.

The HP 17z scored exactly the same benchmark score as the single-core test, scoring 142 points. It scored 652 points in multi-core, which is more than the average 642 points score.

HP 470G7 8VU24EA, however, scored a higher score of 164 points in single-core testing.  It scored 520 points less in the multicore test.

ASUS VivoBook 17M712 also scored lower with 131 points in single-core tests. Also, I scored 622 points less in the multicore test.

The results show that the HP17z processor performs reasonably well. In this section, I’ll be rating the laptop a 9.

HP 17z Laptop Memory (RAM) Performance Review

The laptop has a DDR4 SDRAM running at 2400MHz. The standard memory is 12 GB, And the maximum memory is 16 GB.

DDR4 memory has a faster speed and higher bandwidth than other types of memory.

This brief explanation will give you an idea of the speed this laptop can run with respect to its memory.

You might be pleased to learn that the HP 17z comes with two memory slots that can hold removable RAM. It’s possible to upgrade the memory to 16 GB.

This laptop can do extensive multitasking with 12GB RAM. 16GB RAM will make it even more powerful. The HP 17z laptop has 12GB RAM and can run 25 Chrome browser tabs simultaneously.

You can stream YouTube videos from three browser tabs, without worrying about lag.

To help you understand the RAM’s performance better, I will share the PC Mark 10 benchmark result. PC Mark 10 benchmark measures the performance of a computer’s memory using real-world applications.

It’s also worth noting, that the laptop with the highest score in the benchmark test performed better. In the benchmark test, HP 17z scored 3841.

This performance was below the average benchmark score of 4377 points

The HP 470 G7 topped this table with 4494 points. The HP 17z scored better than the ASUS VivoBook 17M712, which scored 3719 points.

Review of HP 17z Laptop Storage Options and Performance

There are three storage options available for the HP17z. It comes with a PCIe M.2 SSD storage that has a maximum capacity up to 256 GB.

It also has an additional storage option, which combines a 1TB SATA HDD and a 128GB SSD. This storage option comes with an HDD that has a drive speed up to 5400 RPM.

The HP17z also offers a storage option that includes a 1TB SATA HDD with a speed 5400 RPM and a 256GB SDD.

The second and third storage options offer two separate storage options – the HDD as well as the SSD.

These HDD+SSD storage options give you a lot of storage space with the HDD, and fast storage with the SSD. This laptop doesn’t limit you to just one storage drive.

This HP 17z review is however based on the first storage option, 256 GB PCIe M.2 SSD. Unfortunately, this storage option is not as fast and has a smaller storage capacity than the second and third options.

It might fill up quickly with its 256 GB storage capacity. This laptop comes with Additional, an external SD card reader that allows for storage expansion.

One can save more files to the SD card if the laptop storage space is full.

CrystalDiskMark benchmark results will be shared to confirm the laptop’s performance. Crystaldiskmark measures the sequential read-write speeds of a storage device.

A sequential read speed refers to the time it takes for a storage device to open a file. Write speed, on the other hand, is how long it takes for a file to be saved on a computer storage.

The faster the speed of writing and reading, the better this laptop’s performance.

The HP 17z was able to read at 500.1 MBps according to the CrystalDiskMark benchmark. The laptop’s write speed was 325 MBps.

The Lenovo ThinkPad E470, on the other hand, had a read speed 476.8 MBps and write speed 458.7 Mbps. This means that the HP 17z can open files faster than the Lenovo ThinkPad E470.

The Lenovo ThinkPad E470 will continue to save files faster than the HP 17z. Based on all the results which we talk about I think the HP 17z’s performance has been encouraging.

In this storage review section, I’ll be giving it a rating of nine out of ten.

HP 17z Laptop Graphics Card Performance Review

The integrated AMD Radeon Vega 8 graphics cards are included in this HP laptop. The maximum frequency for the graphics card is 1200 MHz.

The AMD Radeon Vega 8 is an integrated graphics card and may not be able perform high-quality graphics-intensive tasks. You will still get playable frame rates if you play modern games at medium settings.

This laptop should be capable of running Far Cry 5 (2018) at 16 frames per second on medium settings.

It should also be capable of running Shadow of the Tomb Raider (2018) at 12 frames per second on a medium setting.

Additionally, I will share the 3DMark benchmark results of this laptop with all of you. 3D Mark is a tool that tests the 3D rendering performance on a computer’s graphic card.

It is important that the more points a laptop gets, the better its performance. The benchmark test resulted in 3871 points for the HP 17z.

The laptop scored more than the 3429 average points.

HP 470 G7 scored 2360 points in this test. The 3DMark test also scored 1878 points for ASUS VivoBook 17M712.

The HP 17z’s GPU can play modern games, but only in medium settings. It performed well in benchmark tests.

I have given it a 9 out of 10 rating in the graphics performance review section.
