Asus ROG Strix GL753 Best Gaming Laptop Review

If you are in the market for a gaming laptop but aren’t able to invest in a device that is VR-ready, there’s a laptop that is able to run the majority of games.

The ROG Strix from Asus ($1,099 for the initial purchase at $1,299 if you test it) is among the very first notebooks on the market to feature the Nvidia GTX 1050 Ti graphics card as well as the first keyboard with RGB backlighting to add some the color.

It is a great laptop; however, other models are in the pipeline with similar specs and prices less than $1,000.

Design of Asus ROG Strix GL753

Asus used the amazing design it employs on its top ROG models and dumbed it down for the budget models. This resulted in a monster which is more ugly than elegant.

The lid is constructed of black plastic that has an imitation-aluminum design, when you compare premium models with glowing lights that are visible on their sides to show the brand’s logo.

They decided to paint a neon orange in the lids of Strix which makes it appear like a bed for a race car.

With 6.4 kilograms and 16.3 dimensions of 10.7 11.5 x 1.3 inches The Strix is lightweight for a gaming notebook that measures 17 inches.

Its sibling, the Alienware 17R3 is significantly larger device at 8.3 kilograms and 16.9 dimensions of 11.5 inches x 1.3 inches.

It is not surprising that it is 14 inches taller. MSI GS63VR Stealth Pro is smaller at 4.2 pounds, and is smaller at 14.9 9 x 9.8 and 0.7 inches.

Display of Asus ROG Strix GL753

On the side are portholes that can be used to connect external displays as well as connect peripherals.

A Ethernet port, HDMI and Mini Display Port outputs are located on the left side as are the two USB 3.0 ports and an additional USB 3.1 Type C port, and an audio/microphone jack.

On the right side, you will find Blu-ray drive, a USB 3.0 port, and the USB 2.0 port, as along with the lock slot. A SD card reader is located just below your palm rest.

 Audio Asus ROG Strix

The speakers of the Strix GL753 sound pretty strong. As I listened to Tegan and Sara’s “Closer,” the sound immediately filled our conference room with a roar of vocals, synths, and drums. With the Dolby-powered ICEPower preloaded in AudioWizard.

I shifted to the Action presetthat emphasized the cymbals and the percussion However, I think that the default settings for multimedia are acceptable for the majority of people if they’re simply playing YouTube videos.

While playing Batman: Arkham Knight, I was able to see that the speakers really delivered punch when the Batmobile launched missiles at drones or enemies spoke via walkie-talkies.

The background music however was muted. I switched to action mode and it gave better-rounded sounds.

Keyboard and Touchpad

The keyboard on the Strix is an extremely pleasant typing experience. With its large 2.1 millimeters of travel and the 60 grams of actuation needed and I was never close to reaching the bottom.

In my 10fastfingers.com testing of typing speed, I logged the speed of 120 word per minute. That’s which was higher than my normal speed of 107 wpm.

My only issue was that my keys could be able to come up quicker, which is more efficient for quick-twitch reaction during playing.

Performance

The GPU was unable to keep up with our normal tests. For Metro: Last Light (high settings 1080p) the Strix was able to reach just 28 fps less than our playability threshold of 30 fps.

Its competitors, the Stealth Pro (GTX 1060) and Alienware (GTX 980M) offered better performance, with a higher 45 fps and 37fps in each case.

On Hitman (1080p Ultra settings, DirectX 12), the Strix recorded another 28 frames per second which is far below the average of 88 fps and Stealth Pro’s 48 frames per second.

When running the Rise of the Tomb Raider benchmark , at medium settings the Strix was able to reach 28.9 FPS, just less than the average.

Do not expect to connect an HTC Vive or Oculus Rift to the Strix since it won’t perform.

While the GTX 1050 as well as 1050 Ti were intended to deliver superior performance over Nvidia’s earlier generation of GPUs however neither of them is thought to be VR-ready.

The laptop received the score in the range of 2.4 in the Steam VR benchmark, rendering these immersive games inaccessible. The Stealth Pro scored 7.4 during that same benchmark.

If you’re not gaming The laptop switches to its integrated Intel HD Graphics 630.

Battery Life

t’s the ROG Strix can last for longer than many desktop replacements. It lasted for five hours and 25 mins on the Laptop Mag Battery Test, which is a continuous internet browsing via Wi-Fi.

It was 1 hour more than the standard (4:23) and much superior to that of the Stealth Pro (2:54).

The Alienware may have been due to its graphics card of the last generation it was the longest-running at 6:07.

Webcam

If you’re using the computer to stream, you should get an additional webcam. In the case of using the webcam at 720p for a selfie at Our lab image was blurry and dark.

My brown shirt looked more black than I did and my hair appeared blurry, and the walls in front of me appeared blurry.

Heat

The Strix was cool and nice during our tests. After for 15 minutes HD video on YouTube and the lower part of the laptop measured at 88°F, the keyboard was 83 degrees.

And the touchpad reached an 81-degree temperature -all of which are below our 95-degree comfortable threshold.

While playing Batman: Arkham Knight for 15 minutes, the middle of the keyboard reached the 91 degree mark, while the touchpad hit 88 degrees, while the lowest point of the notebook was at 105 degrees.

Software and Warranty

Asus pre-loaded software includes a variety of gaming-specific software along with a variety of other helpful applications.

The most notable of these is it’s ROG Gaming Center which is a comprehensive dashboard that displays everything that affects performance such as the memory of GPU and CPU as well as temperature, along with options to boost the speed of fans and turn off it from the Windows key. The second major gaming app, GameFirst IV, makes it simple to determine applications that utilize internet bandwidth to ensure a smooth gaming experience.

Furthermore, Asus’ Splendid Utility allows you to control the temperatures of color (perfect for late-night gaming) and XSplit Game caster can be used to stream.

Unfortunately, there’s a lot of bloatware in there as well, such as Netflix, Minecraft, Drawboard PDF, Candy Crush Soda Saga, Royal Revolt II and Twitter.

Asus is selling its ROG Strix GL753 laptop with a one-year guarantee. Find out how they performed in the tech support showdown along with our the Best and Worst brands review.

Configurations

The ROG Strix model we tested is a model priced at $1,299 that comes with the 2.8-GHz Intel Core i7-770HQ CPU with 16GB of RAM.

Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 Ti graphics card, 4GB of VRAM as well as an 128GB M.2 SSD, and 1TB, 5,400-rpm of hard drive.

For $1,099 you can buy a version that has the Nvidia GTX 1050 GPU instead of the 1050 Ti.

This version also eliminates the SSD altogether leaving only the hard disk drive.

Bottom Line

The ROG Strix GL753 from Asus is a gaming laptop that is affordable equipped with a comfy, RGB-lit keyboard, vibrant display, along with an Nvidia GTX 1050 Ti GPU.

If a laptop is released with 1050 and 1050 Ti that are priced in the sub thousand dollar range, it is almost certain to be more affordable (and we’re certain of it).

We saw the Dell Inspiron 15 7000 Gaming and Acer Aspire VX 15 at CES). Other than that, I’m unable to recommend anything using an AMD GPU that isn’t based on Pascal

There is one exception if you’re looking for an ultra-compact laptop that has more options in terms of configuration.

You can still purchase an edition of Alienware 17 R3 on Amazon (though Dell is phasing it out for models with newer specs) and some have 4K display options.

It’s ideal for watching movies but you’ll never be playing games at that resolution using the 980M GPU.
